Comparison of the Effectiveness of 5% Retinoic Acid Peeling Versus a 5% Peeling Plus 10% Mask Combination in Skin Rejuvenation

Abstract

Introduction: Retinoic acid is widely used in skin rejuvenation due to its ability to stimulate cellular renewal, improve texture, even out skin tone, and reduce fine lines. Clinical outcomes depend on concentration and application protocols.

Objective: To compare the clinical effectiveness of a 5% retinoic acid peel versus a combined protocol consisting of a 5% peel followed by a 10% retinoic acid mask.

Materials and methods: A comparative observational study was conducted with two groups. Group A received a 5% retinoic acid peel, whereas Group B received the same peel followed by a 10% retinoic acid mask. Early adverse reactions were evaluated at 24, 48, and 72 hours, and clinical improvements (brightness, texture, tone uniformity, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation) at days 7 and 21.

Results: Both groups developed expected early irritation, more pronounced in Group B. At day 7, Group B showed greater improvement in brightness (80%), texture (78%), and tone uniformity (72%) compared with Group A. By day 21, improvements in Group B reached 90–92%. Overall effectiveness (≥50% improvement) was 88% in Group B versus 62% in Group A. No severe adverse events were reported.

Discussion: The combination of a 5% retinoic acid peel followed by a 10% retinoic acid mask was more effective than the 5% peel alone, while maintaining an acceptable safety profile. This protocol is an effective option to improve texture, brightness, and tone in patients undergoing skin rejuvenation.
