Introduction: Vaginal dryness is a frequent manifestation of the genitourinary syndrome of menopause and significantly affects the quality of life of peri- and postmenopausal women. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has emerged as a non-hormonal regenerative therapy capable of improving vaginal trophism, lubrication, and sexual function.
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of PRP in improving vaginal dryness and associated symptoms in women from the Paraguayan Alto Chaco.
Materials and methods: A prospective observational study was conducted with 30 peri- and postmenopausal women presenting vaginal dryness. PRP was obtained by centrifugation at 1800 rpm for 8 minutes, followed by a single intravaginal and vulvar application. Symptoms such as poor lubrication, dyspareunia, itching, and burning, as well as indicators of vulvovaginal atrophy, were assessed before treatment and two weeks afterward. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
Results: Poor lubrication and vaginal dryness (93.3% at baseline) improved in 92.8% of participants. Decreased libido improved in 79.7%, while itching and burning improved in 70%. Dyspareunia showed a marked improvement of 92.3%. Severe vaginal atrophy resolved in 100% of cases, and moderate atrophy improved in 71.5%. No adverse events were reported.
Discussion: PRP proved to be an effective and safe therapy for improving vaginal dryness, vulvovaginal atrophy, and sexual function. It represents a valuable therapeutic alternative for climacteric women, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach populations such as the Alto Chaco Paraguayan.
